Burundi : out of nearly a hundred tourist sites identified, only seven are operating
According to surveys carried out by the general directorate of tourism in Burundi, more than a hundred tourist sites have been identified. According to the same source, only seven of these sites are duly equipped to accommodate travelers. A situation which constitutes a blockage in the development of the sector. This was indicated by the Director General of Tourism during a conference debate on Wednesday September 27, 2023 in Bujumbura as part of the celebration of the International Day dedicated to Tourism. During this conference-debate, experts discussed the actions to be taken to improve this sector considered important in the economic life of Burundi.
“The non-development of more than a hundred tourist sites identified throughout the country remains the main challenge. The absence of legal texts constitutes another”, indicated the director general of tourism, Jacques Bigirimana, who also deplores that the management of tourism does not have a sufficient operating budget or control over certain tourist sites ”while all eyes are on us”.
For a better organization of this sector, the director general hopes that with the national tourism policy documents, the sector will experience progress. And the country will benefit from it, he predicts.
