According to witnesses, Oscar was beaten by Imbonerakure who then threw him into the river.

“With his arms and legs tied, he was beaten to death then thrown into the Mubarazi River,” says a member of his family who witnessed this macabre scene on February 18. Another relative of the victim specifies that these young activists from the presidential party had demanded 100,000 Burundian francs from him for not having participated in community work.

This information is confirmed by the local administration.

“The alleged perpetrators of this barbarity are six Imbonerakure: Éric Ndayizeye, Anaclet Bizimana, Aimable, Thierry, Eraste and Ruhwiru. They were apprehended then taken to the police cells in Mbuye, before being transferred to the central prison of Muramvya,” said a municipal councilor.

Oscar Mbonihankuye’s relatives are demanding his body for a dignified burial.

The administrator of the Mbuye commune Evelyne Ndarisasirire regrets that the body has not yet been found despite the mobilization of the police and the population.
