Burundi: a priest calls for the resignation of authorities insensitive to the misfortunes of citizens

“A good shepherd is one having more pity on his flock.” A reminder made last Sunday at the Regina Mundi Cathedral by Father Viateur Ntarataze. The prelate denounced the speech of “everything is fine” conveyed by the country’s leaders who ignore the suffering of the people and called on them to leave power.

In his homily, Father Viateur Ntarataze indicated that in the absence of this sensitivity, the leader should resign as he does not deserve to lead others.

“He who does not hurry to change his program for the good of his neighbor is not a good shepherd. Jesus gives us the example that we must make necessary arrangements for the good of his flock who are hungry and thirsty “, declared the priest during mass last Sunday in the Burundi’s commercial city, Bujumbura whose inhabitants chose walking as an alternative in the wake of the persistent fuel scarcity.

The Christians present said they were touched by the words of Father Viateur Ntarataze. “This priest who is not afraid to tell the truth in the face of what the Burundian population is currently going through.”

He said some people have become insensitive to what God’s people feel and that they will one day have to answer for their actions.

“The one who, in our country, despite long queues for various services, continues to say that everything is fine, do you believe that his speech really pleases his flock? Fortunately the sheep are not aggressive, otherwise, they would bite him,” said Father Viateur.

He winked at the leaders that the people compared to sheep should not always be subject to intimidation and threats.

He stressed that in such situations, the flock becomes emaciated, discouraged, feels neglected, traumatized and is no longer productive, and some sheep choose to flee, others die.

For him, those responsible who cause harm to the population should be removed from office and punished exemplarily so that the mission is entrusted to leaders who deserve it.
