Gitega: CNDD-FDD collects forced contributions to finance its campaign for the 2025 legislative elections

The CNDD-FDD party continues its campaign of forced fundraising for its campaign in the 2025 legislative elections. Residents, especially opposition party activists, denounce “contributions that do not concern us”.

Residents of the province of Gitega (central Burundi) who spoke to SOS Médias Burundi speak of “forced contributions”.

They denounce the fact that non-members of the presidential party are forced to pay.

“The CNDD-FDD has become a state party. Everyone in our commune is called upon to contribute to the presidential party’s campaign. Local party officials, some administrators and members of the Imbonerakure youth league go through the neighborhoods, household by household and forcefully ask for contributions. The minimum amount is 1000 Burundian francs”, deplore residents.

The head of the household must pay for all members of his family including infants, detail residents of the political capital Gitega.

Not far from the Gitega Public Works School (ETP) towards Musave, a barrier was installed by Imbonerakure (members of the CNDD-FDD youth league) to demand contributions from any passerby.

On Rutegama hill in the commune of Gitega, activists of the presidential party crisscross with megaphones to call on residents to make contributions without distinction of political party.

Contributions began to be collected on August 19. And in some localities, access to public services is conditional on the contribution. https://www.sosmediasburundi.org/2024/08/23/buyengero-lacces-au-marche-conditionne-par-la-cotisation-pour-les-legislatives-de-2025/

In a meeting held on Wednesday, August 21 in Gitega for businessmen, Révérien Ndikuriyo, secretary general of the CNDD-FDD, and Georges Nshimirimana, provincial secretary of this party in Gitega, announced that the party needs 3 billion francs to finance its 2025 campaign and 2 billion for the 2027 presidential campaign in the Gitega constituency alone, according to the new administrative division.
