Butaganzwa : an alleged thief lynched to death by residents

A suspected thief was killed by residents on the night of Sunday to Monday in the district of Butaganzwa. It is in the province of Ruyigi in eastern Burundi. INFO SOS Médias Burundi

The man was killed, stoned. His body, covered in blood, was discovered by residents on Monday morning. He has not been identified.

The macabre discovery took place in the locality of Batye. Local sources speak of a thief who was caught, trying to break into a household to steal a bicycle. The police and the local administration call on residents to avoid taking the law into their own hands.

In some provinces, grassroots authorities have reportedly ordered members of joint security committees, dominated by the Imbonerakure (members of the youth league of the CNDD-FDD, the ruling party), to kill thieves caught in crop fields and households, especially former prisoners who recently benefited from the presidential clemency.

Similar situations have already been reported in the southwest and center-east of the country.
