According to local security agents, the body of this thirty-year-old was discovered in his house, where he lived with his wife, a Burundian refugee who also took refuge in the Camp.
The couple had no children. However, internal tensions, unknown to most, seem to have led to this tragedy.

According to the couple’s relatives, disagreements often prevailed between the spouses, leading to the assumption that Innocent’s wife could be involved in his murder. She is said to have had major disagreements with her husband, to the point of maintaining relations with individuals outside the camp. According to witnesses, these individuals were involved in her husband’s murder. After the crime, the woman could not be found, and the police launched an investigation to find the perpetrators of this tragic crime.

The situation has sent shockwaves through the refugee community in the camp, where such events further destabilize people, already weakened by their escape routes. Local authorities promised to do everything possible to solve this case, and the investigation is underway to identify those responsible for this heinous murder and find the missing woman.

Venuste, a refugee from Nyankanda camp, said, “I was deeply shocked to hear of Innocent’s death. He was a good man, and no one deserves to experience such a tragedy. I demand justice for Innocent. His death must not go unpunished. We need security and protection in this camp to prevent these tragedies from happening again.”

Nyankanda camp, a place of refuge for more than 11,000 people fleeing conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, is facing growing concern. Refugees fear that this incident will worsen their living conditions and further affect their security.

In early October 2024, another Congolese refugee was killed by men armed with bladed weapons. Roger Kiboko (62 years old) lived in Bwagiriza camp in the same Ruyigi province.
