Itaba : a couple arrested for infanticide

A tragedy has rocked Nkima village, in Itaba district, Gitega province. A couple was arrested on Monday, March 17, 2025, on suspicion of infanticide.

According to witnesses, Nadine Niyukuri, 22 years old, gave birth to a child before discreetly burying him in a grove in Nkima village. Alerted, the police, in collaboration with the local administration, arrested her and forced her to exhume the child’s body. The district then carried out a proper burial.

Félix Gahungu, chief of Nkima village, confirmed this information and stated that the child’s alleged father, Adrien Ndihokubwayo, was also arrested for complicity.

The couple is currently held in police cells in Itaba awaiting trial. An investigation is underway to shed light on this case.
