Ngozi : the attorney general of the Republic in Ngozi arrested

A new corruption case is shaking the Burundian judicial system. The attorney general of the Republic in Ngozi province, Prosper Yamuremye, was arrested in the afternoon of March 27 and is currently imprisoned in Bujumbura’s central prison, known as Mpimba, in the commercial city.

According to several sources, Prosper Yamuremye is suspected of having released a man implicated in the embezzlement of several grams of gold from a mining cooperative in Kayanza (northern Burundi). The accused, whose identity has not been revealed, denied the charges in court earlier this week. However, as his explanations failed to convince the judges, he was transferred to Ngozi central prison (north).

Unofficial reports indicate that this individual allegedly paid a bribe of 20 million Burundi francs to the prosecutor to secure his release. The prosecutor, already known for his alleged involvement in corruption cases, allegedly used his influence to facilitate this illegal release.

The Ngozi prosecutor first passed through the National Intelligence Service (SNR) cells in the commercial city of Bujumbura before being transferred to the prison in the commercial capital on March 28. He was arrested after a local mining operator denounced the charges for which he is being prosecuted during a meeting with President Évariste Ndayishimiye. The latter stated that he was also aware of other similar cases in which the Ngozi prosecutor was involved.
