Bujumbura, June 2, 2025 — Jean Marie Nahishakiye, Rubirizi zone chief in Mutimbuzi district, Bujumbura province (west), was dismisses from his duties on Tuesday, May 27. Bujumbura provincial governor Désiré Nsengiyumva accuses him of repeated insubordination and disregard for hierarchical instructions. This decision was welcomed by many residents, tired of management deemed ineffective.

The Rubirizi zone, in Bujumbura province, has been experiencing a series of dysfunctions for several months, denounced by the population. According to Mutimbuzi’s district administrator, Siméon Butoyi, complaints against Nahishakiye had multiplied : unresolved problems, a lack of listening, arbitrary decisions…

“This decision was long-awaited. We experience problems every day that no one addresses,” said a resident who requested anonymity.

“It’s time for the administration to get closer to the people.”

In a letter signed by the governor, the former zone chief is accused of “undignified acts” and a clear refusal to follow the advice of his superiors. For many observers, this dismissal sends a strong signal regarding the need for discipline within local structures.

Calls are now being raised for Jean Marie Nahishakiye to be held accountable for the alleged blunders. Some residents are even calling for an investigation into his past management.

An interim zone chief is expected to be appointed in the coming days, pending the appointment of a permanent successor.
