Ngozi : prolonged power outages paralyze businesses and worsen insecurity in the north

Ngozi, September 15, 2025 – In the Kirundo, Ngozi, and Kayanza regions, power outages are seriously disrupting daily life and economic activities. At Regideso, the only state-owned company responsible for water and electricity distribution, officials explain that these outages are linked to a planned power outage aimed at strengthening high-voltage lines and replacing worn-out poles.

Commercial activities paralyzed

The power outages are directly affecting the local economy. Butcher shops have virtually suspended their operations due to a lack of conservation equipment. Welders, meanwhile, are working at a slow pace and are struggling to meet their commitments, causing tensions with their customers. Milk shops, meanwhile, are suffering heavy losses : without refrigeration, the drink deteriorates quickly and often ends up being thrown away.

Hoteliers and traders in struggling

The hotel sector is not spared. Managers report significant damage to their equipment : burnt-out televisions, broken freezers, damaged radios. For many economic operators, the situation directly threatens the survival of their businesses.

Regideso’s version

Contacted, officials from the Northern Region of Regideso explained that these outages are part of a planned load shedding program. According to them, work to replace worn-out columns and reinforce high-voltage lines is underway to improve the absorption capacity of power from the Rusumo regional dam, located on the border between Rwanda and Tanzania.

Growing insecurity at night

Beyond the economic losses, residents denounce growing insecurity. Nighttime outages are reportedly facilitating theft in urban neighborhoods. Some households report no longer leaving their televisions, cushions, or valuables in the living room, preferring to store them in their bedrooms before going to sleep.

Accusations against night patrols

Several residents accuse certain Imbonerakure, young people affiliated with the ruling CNDD-FDD party, of taking advantage of night patrols to commit thefts. These serious accusations are increasing mistrust and fueling the anger of an already distressed population.

A population at the end of Its life

Exasperated, northern residents are demanding rapid and lasting solutions. Between economic losses, destroyed equipment, and a sense of insecurity, many say they have reached the end of their patience with this ongoing situation.
Faced with this crisis, the population is calling on the authorities : they are demanding urgent solutions before the situation spirals out of control.
