Bukinanyana : a man in his sixties castrated by his wife for infidelity
SOS Médias Burundi
Cibitoke, September 22, 2025 – On the night of September 21-22, a domestic tragedy rocked Kibati village, in Bukinanyana district, Bujumbura province, in the west of the country. A sixty-year-old man was seriously mutilated by his wife, who accused him of infidelity and mismanagement of the household belongings. The victim is hospitalized in critical condition, while his attacker has been arrested.
According to testimonies gathered on the scene, Anatole Haramateka, a sixty-year-old resident of Kibati, was castrated by his wife Juliette Nahimana. Nahimana claims to have acted out of anger after forty years of living together, marked, according to her, by repeated infidelities and the squandering of household assets.
The incident occurred around 11:00 p.m. Alerted by screams, neighbors discovered Mr. Haramateka lying on a mat, bleeding. Witnesses report that his wife allegedly used her teeth to tear out his genitals. After initial treatment at a local facility, he was urgently transferred to a Bujumbura hospital, as his life remains uncertain.
Fearing reprisals from the victim’s family, the police immediately arrested Juliette Nahimana, now detained in the Masango zone cell. Speaking to the authorities, she admitted the facts :
“I acted out of anger. For forty years, this home has been nothing but conflict,” she declared.
The Bukinanyana district administrator, Isaac Niyokwizera, called for calm :
“We urge the family and residents to remain calm and let justice do its work.”
Human rights organizations condemn this act, reiterating that alleged infidelity can in no way justify such violence, and insist that justice be served.
According to the doctors treating Mr. Haramateka, his condition remains critical and requires continuous monitoring to avoid any major complications.
