Muramvya, October 3, 2025 — Two agents of the National Post Office (RNP) were arrested and imprisoned in Muramvya, in Gitega province (central Burundi), while a third is currently on the run, in connection with the alleged embezzlement of nearly 500 million Burundi francs.

According to testimonies gathered on site, Fulgence Manirambona, manager of the RNP agency in Muramvya, was arrested on September 26, 2025, before being taken to the provincial police station. Three days later, Mireille Ndayikeza, manager of the Shombo RNP agency, was also arrested and detained at the same location. In the same case, Ancile Muhuragiza, an RNP agent in Muramvya, fled and remains unaccounted for.

The three agents are accused of embezzling funds intended for the purchase of organo-mineral fertilizers and royalties paid by farmers for the first farming season. These arrests severely disrupted the operations of the Shombo and Muramvya RNP agencies, particularly affecting the payment of civil servants’ salaries and the distribution of selected maize seeds.

The district administrator of Muramvya, Éric Nkurunziza, declared that the situation is now “under control.” Reinforcement agents from Gitega and Bujumbura, respectively the political and commercial capitals of Burundi, were dispatched to ensure continuity of services in the region.
