Gishubi, November 9, 2025 — A tragedy has shaken the district of Gishubi, in Gitega province, central Burundi. The lifeless body of 52-year-old Donavine Nibizi was discovered on Friday, November 7, 2025, in the Mucunda River, at the foot of Mugano hill.

According to Servat Manirakiza, chief of Mugano village, the victim had been missing since November 5, the day she went to the health center for treatment. It was a resident who raised the alarm after spotting the body floating in the river.

The circumstances of the death remain unclear. The village chief has not ruled out suicide, but several residents reject this hypothesis. They favor the theory of a murder linked to a land dispute, claiming that the victim was bound before being thrown into the river.

For the time being, no suspect has been arrested, according to local authorities. The victim was buried the same day in Mugano.

An investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances of this death, which has sparked emotion and outrage among the residents of Gishubi.
