Bukinanyana, March 12, 2026 — Since the beginning of 2026, the province of Bujumbura has already recorded the discovery of some forty bodies. Last year, it was among the deadliest provinces in the small east African nation, according to a report by the Iteka League, a pioneering Burundian human rights organization, now forced to continue its work from exile. The violent death of Abraham Niyigarura, a local CNDD-FDD official, has heightened fear and anxiety among the residents. And just since the beginning of the week, this is the fourth body found in Bujumbura province, according to a count by SOS Médias Burundi.
The lifeless body of Abraham Niyigarura, 41 years old, a resident of Bitare village in the Ndora zone of Bukinanyana district, Bujumbura province (western Burundi), was discovered Thursday morning in the Kaburantwa River. According to administrative and family sources, the victim, known as a local leader of the CNDD-FDD, the ruling party, had head injuries suggesting murder.
According to information gathered, Abraham Niyigarura was one of five people responsible for managing Bitare village and was recognized locally for his role within the ruling party. Several sources reported that the body bore significant traces of blood on the head, suggesting he had been struck with a blunt object.
Relatives of the deceased stated that they had not heard from him since Wednesday, March 11. According to their accounts, Abraham Niyigarura had spent the day at home before mysteriously disappearing. His family says they are deeply shocked and believe he was violently attacked by unidentified individuals.
An investigation has been launched.
The family and residents of Bitare village are calling on the relevant authorities to conduct thorough investigations, identify the perpetrators of the crime, and bring them to justice. Administrative and police authorities confirm that an investigation has been launched and are urging the public to cooperate with the investigating services.
