Bujumbura : a mysterious illness already claims victims in Mpanda

Bujumbura, April 8, 2026 — The district of Mpanda, in Bujumbura province, has been struck by an unknown illness that is raising fears of a health crisis. More than 27 people have been affected and five have already died, according to local administrative sources. Fear is gripping the residents as the origin of this illness remains a mystery.

A worrying disease has struck Mpanda : severe headaches, extreme weakness, and bloody urine have been reported. Residents fear a rapid spread, while health authorities are intensifying their efforts to identify the illness before it claims more victims.

The first cases were reported on March 28, 2026, in the villages of Kibuye and Rugazi, in the Rugazi zone. Those affected are exhibiting serious and alarming symptoms, but no pathogen has yet been identified. More than seven households are affected, with at least 26 people currently receiving treatment at local health facilities.

In response to the urgent situation, samples were taken on April 6, 2026, and epidemiological investigations are underway to determine the origin and possible modes of transmission of the disease. Authorities are stressing the importance of prompt medical attention and urging the population to strictly adhere to hygiene measures. The head of the Rugazi zone, Marius Bayakwize, is calling on everyone to go to a health center immediately upon the appearance of any symptoms.

This new outbreak comes just months after another, as yet unidentified, illness was reported in January 2026 in Gihungwe village, also in the Mpanda district. The area, already plagued by mysterious illnesses, remains extremely vulnerable. Every delay in detection or treatment can cost lives. Health authorities and the population are therefore urged to remain extremely vigilant to prevent a repeat of this tragedy.
