Gitega: blood flows again, two people stabbed to death in 48 hours in Gishubi

Gishubi, July 29, 2026 – Blood is flowing again in Gishubi : two people were stabbed to death within 48 hours in this district in Gitega province, central Burundi. These successive homicides have plunged residents into fear and reignited concerns about security in the region.

According to witnesses, the lifeless body of Buzoya, a young man of about 23 years old, was discovered on Monday, July 27, 2026, in Buhanda village, in the Nyakararo valley, in Gishubi district.

Jérôme Minani, chief of Buhanda village, confirms that the young man was brutally stabbed. The body showed injuries on the nose and abdomen.

According to this official, children who were going to the Nyakararo valley to water fields of cabbage and other vegetables discovered the body and alerted local authorities.

At this stage, the circumstances and motive for this murder remain unknown. According to this official, the victim was planning to get married in September 2026.

Young Buzoya was buried the same day.

A young woman killed by her husband

Furthermore, a second homicide was recorded in the same district.

On Tuesday, July 28, 2026, 22-year-old Fidès Ndayishimiye was fatally stabbed by her husband in Ngaruzwa village, also in Gishubi district.

Déo Ntakarutimana, chief of Ngaruzwa village, confirmed the facts. According to him, the victim was suspected by her husband of having extramarital affairs, which allegedly preceded the murder.

Also according to this official, the suspected perpetrator, Édouard Habarugira, turned himself in at the Gishubi police station after the incident. He is held there pending further legal proceedings.

The victim was buried on Wednesday, July 29, 2026. Residents of Ngaruzwa village are demanding that the suspect be brought to justice in a summary trial.

A series of deaths raises concerns in Gitega

These two homicides come after the discovery of two other bodies last Sunday in the Gitega district, according to local sources.

For several human rights organizations, Gitega province is among the regions most affected by murders and violence in Burundi. They are calling on the authorities to strengthen judicial investigations and mechanisms for protecting the population.

The security situation in the country was also recently addressed by the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Burundi. In a public statement, the bishops expressed their concerns about the rise in violence, assassinations, and other forms of insecurity.

This stance provoked a strong reaction from President Évariste Ndayishimiye, who criticized religious leaders, accusing them in particular of presenting a negative image of the national situation.

In Gishubi, residents are now demanding concrete action to put an end to what they consider a surge in criminal activity and are calling for greater security in their villages.
