Burunga, August 7, 2026 — The lifeless body of Emmanuel Bukuru, 48 years old, was found a week after his disappearance in Burunga province, southern Burundi, a few kilometers from the Tanzanian border. Having returned from Tanzania with his savings after several months of work, he never arrived home. Local authorities are focusing on the possibility of a murder committed to steal his money. This case reignites concerns about the violence and extortion regularly reported along this border.

A disappearance after returning from Tanzania

Originally from Butezi village in the Musongati district, Emmanuel Bukuru returned from Tanzania on July 30th, after several months of work to support his family.

According to his relatives, he had gone to his parents’ house in the Muvumu sub-village before heading back to his home in Rubaho, about five kilometers away. He never arrived.

Worried by his absence, his family launched a search and circulated missing person notices in several community groups.

A gruesome discovery after seven days of searching

After a week of searching, his body was found in the bush near Muvumu.

Witnesses reported finding a rope around his neck and another rope nearby. The body was already in an advanced state of decomposition and had apparently been partially eaten by dogs.

The body was buried Thursday afternoon under the supervision of local authorities.

The theory of assassination is favored

For the family and several residents, Emmanuel Bukuru did not take his own life. They suspect he was killed before his body was hung up to make it look like a suicide.

The local administration also dismisses this hypothesis. According to administrative officials, the victim was murdered by individuals who wanted to seize the money he was bringing back from Tanzania. The savings Emmanuel Bukuru is said to have brought back remain missing.

The exact circumstances of his death will, however, have to be determined by a judicial inquiry.

Workers returning from Tanzania regularly at risk

According to testimonies gathered by SOS Médias Burundi, Emmanuel Bukuru’s case is not an isolated one.

Every year, hundreds of Burundians cross the Tanzanian border to work in the fields or engage in other temporary work. Upon their return, some claim to have been victims of theft, assault, or extortion targeting savings accumulated after months of work.

Residents of the former districts of Giharo, Kayogoro, and Bukemba, as well as neighboring localities, say that certain roads remain particularly feared by travelers.

Recurring accusations against extortion networks

Residents interviewed by SOS Médias Burundi denounce the alleged involvement of certain local officials, in collusion with members of the CNDD-FDD youth league, the Imbonerakure, in extortion targeting travelers on certain border roads.

The villages of Mutwana and Kibimba are specifically cited by residents as high-risk areas.

The accused have not responded to these allegations.

Precedents that fuel concerns

The death of Emmanuel Bukuru comes amidst a wave of extortion cases that have already erupted in recent years in the former communes of Kayogoro, Giharo, and Bukemba.

Police officers, including senior officers, as well as some administrative officials, have been arrested, suspended, or prosecuted in cases related to accusations of racketeering, extortion, or abuse of power, particularly targeting travelers and traders.

These incidents reinforce the concerns of residents, who are demanding better oversight of the services responsible for their security in border areas.
