Nakivale (Uganda): torrential rains cause injuries and material damage
This week, heavy rains fell on the region where the Nakivale refugee camp in Uganda is located. In addition to the injured, the camp’s central market as well as several goods and houses were destroyed. The UNHCR is distributing tents to the most needy. INFO SOS Médias Burundi
According to witnesses, the central Kityaza market in Nakivale refugee camp has been totally demolished.
“Stands were destroyed, goods washed away. People were injured while fleeing. It was terrifying”, report witnesses.
According to refugees, the rain that caused the flooding fell in the Isingiro area which is home to the Nakivale camp.
“[…], runoff water from the hills overlooking the market invaded it, like an overflowing lake. Surprised, everyone fled”, testify traders who lament a great loss.
Until this Saturday, there were more than 40 houses and more than 70 toilets destroyed by rainwater and several people injured and homeless.
The UNHCR has started distributing tents for the most needy.
The Nakivale camp hosts more than 140,000 refugees, including more than 33,000 Burundians.
