Dzaleka : a grenade explosion injured 15
A grenade was thrown on Wednesday night by unidentified people in the Dzaleka refugee camp in Malawi. A bistro of a Burundian community leader was targeted. Police say they have launched an investigation. INFO SOS Médias Burundi
The incident took place around 8 p.m. and took place in the area called “Kaware I”. The perpetrator of the explosion was not seen.
“There was a power outage. And the assistant to the president of the executive committee of Burundian refugees was about to close his bar. It is there that a stranger entered and threw a grenade which seriously injured several people, including Balthazar, this Burundian leader”, says a witness.
The police quickly intervened and made several arrests.
“Several people who were near the bistro were arrested and taken to the camp dungeons. And besides, an excavation was carried out on the spot. The police explain that there were reportedly weapons illegally held by refugees. The first track would be a kind of revenge”, add refugees who confided in SOS Médias Burundi.
Security measures have been taken.
“The curfew is now set at 6 p.m., exits must be regulated again and anyone unknown here must be reported to the police. We fear other severe measures”, underline refugees.
These refugees are asking the police to be extra vigilant to ensure their safety, especially during this holiday season.
The Dzaleka camp is home to around 52,000 refugees, including 11,000 Burundians.
