Ngozi : a teacher gets seven years in prison

A criminal sentence of seven years, the withdrawal of the right to any function of the State of a social nature, a hundred thousand francs fine, this is the punishment pronounced this Wednesday by the Court of Ngozi against Ezéchiel Minani.
The teacher is accused of raping his 18-year-old pupil. Mr. Minani had been caught in the act of sexually abusing the young girl in a hotel room in the town center of Ngozi province. The case dates back to last Thursday. The former socio-cultural adviser to the governor of Ngozi must also pay two million Burundi francs in moral compensation costs to the family of the raped girl.
If he does not pay all these fees, Ezechiel Minani will face a subsidiary sentence of ten years. The Court ruled on the case after a deliberation the day before.
During the flagrance trial on Tuesday, the teacher pleaded guilty. Ezechiel Minani had implored that his sentence be “lightened up to two months of penal servitude”.
