In addition to the five-year jail, Béatrice Yamuremye must pay a fine of one hundred thousand Burundi francs and pay one million Burundi francs to the public treasury.
The crime for which Yamuremye was brought to justice dates back to September 25. She hit her husband with a pestle. He died while being evacuated to the hospital.
The suspect pleaded not guilty. “We were fighting. An adobe brick fell on him,” she defended herself in court.
When asked about the blood on the pestle, Béatrice Yamuremye said “it came from my menstruation.”
The public prosecutor had requested a ten-year jail sentence and a fine of 100,000 Burundi francs against her.
Béatrice Yamuremye was not assisted by a lawyer.
Her in-laws, who were hoping for a heavy sentence for the prisoner, had demanded compensation costs of up to 60 million Burundi francs.
