Rumonge : a police officer seriously injured by machete during an arrest

Rumonge, May 2, 2025 – A police officer was seriously injured by a machete Thursday morning in Mugara, in the district and province of Rumonge (southwestern Burundi), while attempting to arrest a wanted man. The man violently resisted his arrest.
The incident took place in Mugara village, in the Gatete zone. The police officer was executing an arrest warrant issued by the Rumonge Public Prosecutor’s Office against an individual accused of rebelling against a decision of the local court.
However, during the operation, the suspect brandished a machete and injured the officer. According to local sources, despite his injury, the police officer managed to subdue the man, who was then taken to the provincial police station cell in Rumonge.
Local authorities denounce this attack and call on the population to collaborate with the police to ensure security in the region.
