Ngagara : a stockpile of uniforms reduced to ashes, the police base cries out for abandonment

Bujumbura, May 21, 2025 – A large stockpile of new Burundi National Police (PNB) uniforms went up in smoke in a fire at a logistics depot in Ngagara. While the cause of the fire remains unknown, it has rekindled deep anger within the police ranks, where many denounce opaque management and persistent inequalities in the distribution of equipment.

A fire of unknown origin ravaged a Burundi National Police (PNB) depot located in neighborhood 10 of the Ngagara zone, north of Bujumbura, on the night of Monday to Tuesday. The fire consumed a large quantity of new uniforms stored in the logistics department.

Police Major General Christophe Manirambona, Deputy Inspector General of the PNB, rushed to the scene to help contain the flames. Despite this, the damage was considerable.

But beyond the material losses, frustration reigned among the ranks. “It’s revolting. How can we stockpile new uniforms while we’ve been wearing torn uniforms for years?” lamented an officer we met in Bujumbura.
“Some of us haven’t received any replacements for over three years.”

Several police officers openly accused the system of unfair and opaque management. “Some units are favored, others are overlooked. This fire may have been accidental, but it mainly highlights a blatant inequality in the distribution of equipment,” complained a senior officer who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Others suggested possible sabotage or an attempt to conceal evidence.
“You can’t burn so many uniforms simply through negligence.” “This warehouse should have been secured,” complains a former inspector.

The police administration promises a thorough investigation. But few in the ranks seem to believe in a clear outcome. “It will be a superficial investigation, as usual. No one will be held accountable,” says bitterly an officer.

Meanwhile, on the ground, patrols continue… in rags.
