A body discovered on the beach of Lake Tanganyika in Gitaza

Rumonge, June 30, 2025 – A body was discovered on Sunday morning, around 6:30 AM, on the beach of Lake Tanganyika, in the center of Gitaza, in Muhuta district, Rumonge province, located in southwestern Burundi. The victim has been identified as Rémy Ntiruvahirya, aged 35.
Originally from the Kirombwe sub-village, in Gitaza village, also in this province, Rémy Ntiruvahirya was last seen on Saturday evening on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, according to several witnesses. They report that the body showed signs of an unnatural death, suggesting a possible assault.
At this stage, the exact circumstances of his death remain unknown. A police source indicated that the victim may have suffered from mental illness, information the family has not confirmed.
Local administration authorities, accompanied by members of the deceased’s family, carried out the burial in the afternoon. An investigation has been opened to shed light on the true causes of Rémy Ntiruvahirya’s death.
