Gitega, August 18, 2025 – A bloody tragedy rocked Mubuga village, in the district and province of Gitega (central Burundi), on the night of Sunday, August 17. A 65-year-old man, Joseph Nzisabira, was found dead after being violently attacked with clubs and then finished off with a machete in his home around 11:00 p.m.

According to testimonies collected from the scene, the attack took place in particularly brutal circumstances. The Mubuga village chief, Emmanuel Misigaro, confirmed the information, specifying that the exact motives for the murder are not yet known. However, he did not rule out a land dispute, the possibility considered most likely by local authorities.

Three suspects were arrested early on the morning of Monday, August 18. Among them are the victim’s son, Ferdinand Hakizimana (30 years old), his wife, Marie Nshimirimana, and another woman identified as Jacqueline Ngendakumana. All were transferred to the Gitega police for further investigation.

The victim’s body was taken to the morgue at the Gitega Regional Hospital pending forensic formalities.

This murder has sparked deep emotion in the local community. Residents hope that justice will shed full light on this tragedy so that those responsible can be held accountable.
