Nduta (Tanzania) : several dozen houses destroyed by torrential rains

Nduta, October 4, 2025 – Torrential rain accompanied by strong winds hit the Burundian refugee camp of Nduta, located in the Kigoma region of northwest Tanzania, overnight from Friday to Saturday. Provisional reports indicate at least ten people injured and more than thirty houses destroyed.

According to the camp representative appointed by the administration, the injured were treated by the Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) hospital for intensive care. No deaths have been reported.

The wind uprooted several trees, which fell on shelters in zones 12 and 13, the worst affected. “It happened as we were getting ready to sleep. We lost everything,” said a refugee contacted by SOS Médias Burundi.

The victims, now homeless, are requesting emergency aid and the reconstruction of their homes. In the meantime, some have taken refuge in schools recently closed by the camp administration.

The Nduta camp is home to more than 58,000 Burundian refugees, most of whom have settled in Tanzania since the 2015 political crisis, triggered by the late President Pierre Nkurunziza’s controversial third term that same year.
