Kayanza, October 10, 2025 – A domestic tragedy occurred in the town of Kirema, Kayanza district, Butanyerera province, northern Burundi. A man was arrested by the national police on Wednesday, October 8, suspected of fatally assaulting his wife with a stick during the night of Tuesday, October 7 to Wednesday, October 8.

According to administration sources and witnesses, the couple had long lived in a tense atmosphere. The man, often described as a drunkard and irresponsible, reportedly stopped providing for his family, provoking numerous arguments. “He spent most of his days drinking, and he no longer contributed anything to the household,” confided a close friend of the couple.

Authorities denounce the effects of alcohol

Audace Minani, Kayanza zone chief, confirmed the suspect’s arrest and indicated that the crime was likely committed under the influence of alcohol. He deplored the rise in domestic violence linked to the excessive consumption of artisanal beverages.

“We call on the population to stay away from these alcohol-based products, which destroy families and lead to tragedies like this,” he declared.

The administration official also urged the judicial authorities to quickly investigate the case so that justice can be done for the victim. The suspect, now in the hands of the police, is awaiting trial.
