Non-compliant metal construction materials worry regulators
SOS Médias Burundi
Bujumbura, March 26, 2026 — Metal construction materials imported into Burundi and used on numerous building sites are reportedly far from meeting the quality and durability standards required by the Burundi Bureau of Standards and Quality Control (BBN). This is the conclusion of a recent inspection mission conducted in several provinces of the country.
Behind these findings, serious suspicions are emerging. Traders interviewed by our newsroom claim that non-compliant products continue to flood the market, with the knowledge and complicity of certain officials. One of them goes further, denouncing corrupt practices which, according to him, are undermining quality control efforts.
“A significant portion of the materials do not meet standards,” he confided, while accusing some officials of prioritizing their personal interests over construction safety.
During this visit, the BBN delegation attempted to reassure the public, stating that strict measures would be taken. Materials deemed non-compliant would be returned to their countries of origin, while those already stored within the country would be withdrawn from the market.
But on the ground, questions remain : how did these products pass inspections? And will the announced sanctions actually be enforced?
In a context where Burundi aspires to become an emerging country by 2040 and a developed country by 2060, the issue of the quality of construction materials appears more than ever as a matter of public safety and governance.
