Bubanza : over 150 inmates released
At least 159 prisoners were released by the minister in charge of justice on Thursday. They were detained at the central prison of Bubanza (west Burundi). Minister Domine Banyankimbona explained that this release is part of the policy to relieve prison congestion. INFO SOS Médias Burundi
All those who were released were detained for minor crimes. They were released on the proposal of a commission which had been mandated to analyze the criteria for the release of certain categories of prisoners.
Serious or unforgivable offenses
Domine Banyankimbona indicated that people accused of endangering the internal security of the State, blood crimes and rape are not concerned by this measure.
“Today, we released 159 detainees but we plan to release at least 231 prisoners at Bubanza prison. This is a process that continues,” insisted Minister Banyankimbona.
Pardoned detainees must report to the public prosecutor’s office closest to their home on specific days.
“This is a provisional release,” recalled the Attorney General of the Republic.
To the former prisoners who must pay damages, Léonard Manirakiza asked prosecutors to invest in ensuring that the injured people are compensated.
Bubanza prison has a capacity of only 200 people. It housed 454 detainees until this Thursday, including 4 minors. Our colleague Floriane Irangabiye is serving a 10-year prison sentence there.
