Nduta (Tanzania) : a woman raped

A Burundian woman refugee at the Nduta camp in Tanzania was raped by three men. According to the victim, her rapists spoke Igiha, a Tanzanian dialect. She is undergoing intensive care at the MSF (Doctors Without Borders) hospital in the camp.

Her name is S.M, mother of three children.

The crime occurred last Friday, not far from zone 16 in a natural reserve where she had gone to look for firewood. She was rescued by passers-by who saw her dying.

“She was lying down, couldn’t talk or walk. Passersby then called for help and she was transported to the MSF hospital in zone 4,” indicate her relatives who are calling for investigations to apprehend the criminals.

When she regained consciousness, she remembered the dialect her attackers spoke. “They are indeed Tanzanians as they spoke in their language ‘Igiha’ close to Kirundi,” she said.

However, she indicates that she cannot remember the faces, which makes it difficult for humanitarian NGOs that want to help her to file a complaint, according to refugees.

Women who go to draw water or look for firewood in reserves located not far from the Nduta camp are often victims of this type of act.

“Sometimes the attackers are recognized by Burundian refugee girls and women but they are never worried. So, we recommend that there be police patrols in these places to guarantee our security and once the attackers are apprehended, that they be punished exemplarily without favoritism,” suggest Burundian refugees.

The Nduta camp is home to more than 64,000 Burundian refugees.
