Bukinanyana (Cibitoke) : the number of traffic accidents is skyrocketing
According to sources within road transport companies, at least 12 people have been killed in accidents and around thirty seriously injured in less than two months. This happened in Bukinanyana district in Cibitoke province, in northwest Burundi. The causes of these accidents include alcohol and excessive speed. The police are accused of not punishing the perpetrators of the accidents. The police do not deny the scale of the situation, but believe that there is a certain exaggeration on the part of the transporters.

Residents and transporters speak of an unusual situation.
Very angry, bus drivers and motorcycle riders accuse the police of corruption.
“Bus drivers and motorcycle taxi riders pay 10,000 and 20,000 Burundi francs per week respectively to the police. In return the police no longer carry out rigorous checks,” laments a driver.
And added, “To compensate for the money given to the police, we are obliged to transport more travelers exceeding the number of passengers authorized by the insurance services.”
Following poor loading, cases of driving accidents have become commonplace.
According to our sources, in just less than two months, at least 12 people have been killed and more than 30 others seriously injured.
The interviewed district police commissioner denies the facts and speaks of a context of one-upmanship where certain drivers exaggerate when they give the results of driving accidents.
The district administrator, for his part, indicates that he has already heard of cases of accidents which have direct links with bribes demanded by the police from transport vehicle drivers and motorcyclists. This authority plans to organize meetings with police authorities to resolve this issue and promises a rapid response to everyone’s concerns.
