All stakeholders in this sector participated in this meeting with the Minister in charge of health. This response plan against monkeypox can be modified if necessary according to Minister Lyduine Baradahana. It is based on seven pillars necessary for the fight against this epidemic : disease surveillance, care, communication and education towards the population, monitoring of patients, screening in the laboratory mainly and coordination for the response.
“This is a very expensive plan, about 14 million dollars. Since we declared the disease on July 25, we have benefited from the support of development partners and the Burundian government has also used the budget that was intended for emergencies” stressed Minister Baradahana.
She reported that in just 12 days, the ministry has already recorded 55 cases of monkeypox. The population is called upon to always observe preventive measures because the care, although free, requires a lot of funds as indicated by the Minister in charge of health.
The country has 49 health districts and 22 of them record patients related to monkeypox.
WHO Concerns
WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus will convene an emergency committee under the International Health Regulations to assess the situation regarding the monkeypox outbreak in Africa, its potential international spread, and the committee will also consider whether the current outbreak will represent a public health emergency of international concern, according to the World Health Organization.
