According to eyewitnesses of the shooting, the police officer opened fire on two waiters. The latter, a young woman and a young man, prevented him from forcibly drinking the customers’ beers.

“The police officer went to a table and tried to take the customers’ bottles by force. A fight then broke out between him and some waiters. He opened fire on them, killing the young woman and the young man on the spot,” say people who were there.

In uniform, the officer was alone. He ran away after committing the crime, according to local sources. Witnesses say that the third victim, a customer who was in this bar, was hit by stray bullets. He was evacuated to a local care facility before dying a few hours later.

“This customer was not targeted by the police officer. He was just unlucky enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time,” say people who saw the scene.

The provincial administration confirmed the incident. It indicates that the concerned officer is actively being sought and asks the population to get involved. Residents of the town center of Ngozi who spoke to SOS Médias Burundi say that police officer Ndayisenga is known for such blunders.

“He must be found and punished in an exemplary manner. But also, police officers must be brought back to order and trained on the professionalism and ethics of their profession, continuously,” suggests a civil servant from Ngozi.

Déo Ndayisenga is assigned to the provincial office in charge of agriculture, livestock and environment.
