Gitega : two couples imprisoned in Giheta for attempted murder
Two couples are currently held in police cells in Giheta, Gitega province (central Burundi), on suspicion of attempted murder. Dismas Niyibigira and Salvator Nijimbere, two brothers, along with their wives Nadine Ngendakumana and Georgette Niyomasabo, were arrested on Monday, March 31, 2025, in Gisuru village, Giheta district.

The arrest was carried out by the police in collaboration with local administration officials. The suspects have been remanded in custody for the time being.
The case dates back to the night of Sunday, March 30, 2025, when Élysée Niyonzima, 42 years old, was seriously injured with a knife in Gisuru village. According to Charles Habonimana, deputy chief of this village, the victim was rushed to the Saint-Joseph Clinic in Giheta for intensive care. His condition was considered critical at the time.
According to Habonimana, the motive for the attack was a land dispute between Élysée Niyonzima and other members of his family. He allegedly opposed the sale of a piece of land, causing tensions with his relatives.
Investigations have already been initiated by the police, and according to the deputy chief of Gisuru village, the suspects will soon be brought to justice to answer for their actions.
Applicable legal provisions
Thus, in the case of attempted murder, the perpetrators face a sentence of fifteen years of penal servitude.
