Grenade attack leaves one dead, several injured in Cibitoke

Cibitoke, July 23, 2025 – A family was violently targeted overnight from Wednesday to Thursday around 8 p.m. in Rusiga neighborhood, located in the zone and commune of Cibitoke, Bujumbura province (western Burundi). A grenade attack claimed the life of an elderly woman and left three other family members seriously injured.

The incident occurred between alleyways 9 and 10 in Rusiga while the family was having dinner. Suddenly, a grenade thrown by unidentified individuals exploded inside the house, instantly killing the elderly woman. An elderly man and two children were seriously wounded.

The injured victims were quickly taken to the hospital, where they are receiving intensive care. The deceased’s body was moved to the morgue as investigations continue.

According to sources within the security services, the attack appears to have been targeted, though the perpetrators remain unknown. Local authorities expressed shock, noting that the neighborhood had previously been considered peaceful and had no history of such violence.

Police have launched an investigation to identify those responsible and determine their motives. Meanwhile, the authorities are urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with security forces to shed light on this heinous act.
