Gitega, November 15, 2025 — Hardly a day goes by without a body being found in Gitega province, described by several local analysts as a “cemetery province.” Cases follow one after another, but according to many residents, the investigations never lead to any results. The latest case involves the discovery of the lifeless body of Générose Gakecuru, 45 years old and mother of three, found on Friday, November 14, in Macu village, in Gitega district and province.
According to a witness interviewed at the scene, the body was discovered just twelve meters from her home. The information was confirmed by Audace Nkurikiye, chief of Macu village, who indicated that the circumstances of the murder remain unknown. “The investigation is ongoing,” he stated, specifying that no suspect has yet been arrested. The victim was buried the same day.
But within the community, concern is palpable. Several residents believe that Générose Gakecuru was killed while bound. They are calling for independent investigations to shed light on this latest crime.
This murder comes just one week after the discovery of the body of 52-year-old Donavine Nibizi, found on November 7, 2025, in the Mucunda River, at the foot of Mugano hill, in the district of Gishubi. A series of tragedies fuels fear and frustration in a province where questions remain unanswered.
