Kakuma, April 7, 2026 — A fire of unknown origin ravaged the “Bujumbura Shop,” a shopping center owned by a Burundian refugee, in Zone I of Kakuma II, Block 2. Losses are estimated at over five million Kenya shillings.
The incident broke out early Monday evening. “Neither the businessman nor the police, who arrived late, could identify the cause of the fire. The fire started inside; an electrical problem is suspected,” reports a source on the scene.
The shopping center was full of food, drinks, and clothing. “The owner is a well-known wholesaler here. Other small traders come to him for their supplies. He is also an authorized distributor of food for the WFP (World Food Program), which earns him a great deal of respect in the camp,” our source added.
Despite the absence of firefighters, refugees from all communities tried to extinguish the fire, but in vain, demonstrating the esteem they have for the owner.
With the food distribution period approaching, residents fear delays, as the fire affected one of the WFP’s main distributors in the area. They are calling on the Agency to take swift action and recommend the deployment of more fire trucks to prevent future tragedies.
No casualties have been reported. The Kakuma complex and its extension in Kalobeyei currently host more than 250,000 refugees, including approximately 25,000 Burundians, who have been facing a recent surge in crime.
