DRC : more than two hundred thousand new displaced persons registered in Ituri in 2023
The office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs in the DRC reports that 202,000 Congolese have fled their homes since the beginning of this year, 2023, in the province of Ituri, in eastern Congo. According to the organization, the number is more than one million six thousand displaced.
“The humanitarian situation is also deteriorating in the province of Ituri, northeast DRC, following the ever-growing insecurity. There is an increase in displaced persons as a result of this situation”, indicates OCHA.
The organization specifies that women represent 51% of people who have fled their households and that “more than 84% of displacements are due to attacks and armed clashes.”
“In the last 18 months, about 829,000 people have returned to their homes, but the situation is not stable,” admits OCHA.
The territories most affected by this situation are Irumu, Mahagi and Djugu, despite the state of siege measure in force in the provinces of Ituri and North Kivu for two years.
