Dzaleka (Malawi): three Burundian refugees arrested

Jérémie Ngendakumana, Faustin Niyukuri and Thadée Maombi were arrested a week ago. A police officer who arrested them had no summons and have not yet revealed their detention place. Their families fear for their safety. INFO SOS Médias Burundi

They were inside the camp at the time of their arrest, according to our sources.

“It was police officers in a police van who conducted the triple arrest. The three refugees were taken to a location that had until now been kept secret,” their relatives report.

According to our sources, the three refugees worked in a peanut drying and processing factory in the Blantyre area. They would have demanded their salary equivalent to five months of arrears, which would have cost them this fate.

“We suspect the employer of having used his power and money to silence them. But what is more dangerous, they are nowhere to be found in all the custodies. And the police here at the camp say they do not have their names in the register of defendants”, refugees at the Dzaleka camp complain.

Relatives of those affected are asking the police to get involved to find out where their loved ones are being held.

The Dzaleka camp currently has more than 50,000 refugees from several African countries, including more than 11,000 Burundians.
