Kayanza: new shortage of gasoline, the population can’t bear it anymore

Gas stations in Kayanza province in northern Burundi are in dire need of gasoline. Local sources say that only one station in six in the province serves customers occasionally. Residents deplore the increase in the price of transport tickets that carriers impose on passengers without any form of explanation and ask the administrative and police authorities to find a solution. The price of a motorcycle transport ticket has increased by 300 francs in the capital of Kayanza province. For motorcycle transport from the capital to the interior of the province or to neighboring provinces, the price has increased by 500 Burundian francs, according to sources in the regional capital.

“Traveling on a motorbike in this center has increased by 300 Burundian francs, and when you leave the city to Kanyaru (Burundi-Rwandan border) and towards Ngozi province by motorbike, the price has increased by between 500 and 1000 francs,” says a resident of Kayanza town.

Passengers deplore the difficulties they experience getting to work.

“Normally, I traveled by motorbike to go teach in Matongo (one of the communes of the province). But with the rise in the price of the transport ticket I am no longer able to pay the round trip price. I am forced to ask a lift to go to work. I do it in spite of myself because I am no longer even able to provide for the needs of my family,” laments a teacher from the Matongo municipal high school.

According to bikers contacted, the gasoline they use can be purchased on the black market at a very high price. It is difficult, if not impossible, to find them at gas stations.

Clients ask authorities concerned to closely monitor this issue for the interest of the population.

Remember that the government increased the price of fuel twice in less than two months, between July and September.
