Press : RSF speaks of relief after the pardon granted to journalist Floriane Irangabiye by President Ndayishimiye
In an interview with SOS Médias Burundi late Thursday in the night, Sadibou Marong, director of the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) office for sub-Saharan Africa, welcomed the fact that “we are relieved to see that Floriane Irangabiye, who was supposed to serve ten years in prison for doing her job as a journalist, will be able to see her family and friends again”. According to Sadibou Marong, whose organization has continued to denounce the detention of journalist Floriane Irangabiye, all journalists and defenders of press freedom who mobilized for her (Floriane’s) cause are also delighted to see her free, to be able to take care of her health and later to resume her legitimate work as a journalist.
RSF considers that Floriane should never have been arrested in the first place, and calls on Burundian authorities to protect press freedom “by releasing journalist Sandra Muhoza” and ensuring that Burundian journalists can “freely carry out their work without fear of reprisals”.
