According to several witnesses, gunmen “in uniform resembling that of the (Malawi) army, aboard a pick-up that resembles vehicles of the (Malawi) police” entered two areas of Dzaleka camp : Lisungwe and Kawale.

“We suspect that these are police officers because the victims called for help, in vain,” said refugees from Dzaleka.

Several gunshots were heard. Three shops run by Rwandans and Burundians were then vandalized. A Burundian trader told police that “criminals stole three million Malawian kwacha from him.”
