Dzaleka (Malawi) : four nurses dismissed

The camp administration and the UNHCR have dismissed nurses after an investigation into the theft of medicines intended for refugees in Dzaleka camp located in Dowa district, some 41 kilometers from Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi. The latter are jubilant. INFO SOS Médias Burundi

The investigation carried out after the theft of medicines at Dzaleka camp in Malawi resulted in the dismissal of nurses allegedly involved in this case.

Indeed, at the end of February, a large stock of medicines had been emptied in the said camp.

Those who were sent back are all nationals. “They allegedly facilitated the act and sold these drugs to private pharmacies,” according to the investigation.

Another conclusion of the investigation that satisfies the occupants of the Dzaleka camp is that two refugees who were arrested after reporting the theft to the police are currently free.

The administration and the UNHCR reassured the refugees on Friday that urgent measures have been taken to prevent such thefts. The replacement nurses will start work on Monday next week, they promised.

Refugees speak of satisfaction. But they demand that the pharmaceutical stock be supplied because, they regret, the lack of these products has been a big problem for some time, while the camp is expanding day by day.

Designed to accommodate 10,000 people, Dzaleka currently hosts more than 50,000 refugees, including more than 11,000 Burundians.
