The convening of the extraordinary council meeting was signed by Charles Ndagijimana this Monday, October 17. He is the acting chairman of the board, but he is not recognized by the main shareholders of Kira Hospial S.A Swiss Hospital.

Issues on the agenda, as stated by Mr. Ndagijimana are – the adoption of the minutes of the meeting of September 6, 2022, the presentation of the provisional report of the audit of the company as well as miscellaneous issues.

The next day, October 18, representatives of the company Swissmed International LTD, the main shareholder of the most prestigious hospital in Burundi responded. They opposed the holding of the session which took place in the commercial city of Bujumbura in the afternoon of October 19th.

“We are indignant to note that a body in this case, a board of directors, can be convened without our being officially informed. We strongly oppose the convening of such a body”, they indicated.

They also reaffirm that the governance of Kira Hospital has been irregular since April 1, 2022, but that they remain open to any constructive working session for the hospital.

Since April 2022, Kira Hospital has been going through a management and governance crisis. Doctor Christophe Sahabo, its Director General is in detention for several months. Among other things, he is accused of “mismanagement and fraudulent management”. His lawyers have always denounced “a politically motivated case” based on “unfounded charges”.

Recently, a little brother of Doctor Christophe Sahabo and his lawyer Sandra Ndayizeye, daughter of former President Domitien Ndayizeye, were arrested and detained for a few days in the central prison of Bujumbura before being released. Several local and international observers speak of a case studded with several irregularities and ask the Burundian justice to be impartial.
