DRC-Kalehe: the two additional weeks granted by the CENI found not enough
The local civil society is requesting the extension of voters’ registration until May. The Kalehe civil society’s territorial consultation framework (CCTS Kalehe) recommends that the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) extend the electoral registration operation until next May. In a document, the civil society from Kalehe in South Kivu puts forward several reasons justifying the request. They include the lack of enrollment centers.
“The delayed movement of kits in several registration centers in the territory, insufficiency of centers and kits, lack of energy for the machines during sunny days and the multiple breakdowns in all the registration centers”, the posted press release says.
The civil society of Kalehe fears the expiry of the additional 15 days granted by the CENI while nothing much has yet been done.
This commission decided to extend the voters registration process in operational area 3. It had thus granted the 15-day deadline from March 18 to April 1. A catch-up period deemed insufficient by public opinion and civil society.
