The incident occurred on Wednesday night in zone I, village 2 (community 11).

“He broke down the door and entered, armed with a bladed weapon. The head of the household defended himself and then called for help. His neighbors intervened and apprehended the criminal who had already injured the head of the household. The latter is admitted to the hospital. Nothing was stolen,” reports the community leader of village 2.

The suspect was presented to the police who are conducting their investigations. The population was almost carried away by anger to take justice into their own hands.

The thief was also injured during these night disturbances. He received medical treatment and returned to the police cells at the Mahama camp.

This bandit was later recognized by the police who claim to have been looking for him for some time for theft offenses.

“His name is Bukuru from zone III. But he was invisible in the camp, we do not know where he slept. He is from the Batwa community and is known with his twin as being part of the thieves here. Butoyi is also wanted by security services”, we learned from sources close to the case.

Occupants of the camp demand that such armed individuals be punished in accordance with the law to discourage banditry which has become commonplace following the high cost of living and extreme poverty that prevails in Mahama.

Mahama, the large refugee camp in Rwanda is home to more than 63,000 people including more than 40,000 of Burundian origin, the rest being Congolese.
