Nakivale (Uganda) : a Burundian refugee child found dead, burned

The victim disappeared last Saturday before being found three days later, burned and mutilated, far from his village. One person has been arrested as part of the investigation.

A tragedy has rocked the Nakivale refugee camp in Uganda. A young Burundian child, a third-grade pupil, was found dead on Monday, after disappearing last Saturday. His family, who live in the village of New Congo, had reported him missing after seeing him playing near their home.

“We last saw him playing with other children, then he never came back. We searched everywhere before reporting him missing to the police,” the victim’s parents said.

Three days later, the unthinkable happened. His charred and mutilated body was discovered by children in a village inhabited by refugees of Somali origin, some distance from his home.

“There was no sign of fire around him, which suggests he was burned elsewhere before being abandoned there,” the shocked parents reported.

Faced with this tragedy, the Ugandan police arrested a woman of Congolese origin, suspected of involvement in the case. Local sources indicate that she is accused of occult practices, but no formal evidence yet establishes a direct link to this crime.

The child’s parents are demanding a thorough investigation to identify the perpetrators and understand the circumstances of this gruesome act.

Nakivale camp, one of the largest in Uganda, is home to more than 140,000 refugees, including over 33,000 Burundians. This crime raises concerns about the security of refugees and calls for better protection of vulnerable populations.
