Rumonge, February 18, 2026 – Three young men were sentenced on Wednesday to life imprisonment by the Rumonge First Court in Burunga Province (southern Burundi) for the rape and murder of a minor. The events date back to February 15. The verdict was handed down following a summary trial, attended by a large crowd still in shock.
The convicted men are Emmanuel Mpawenayo (21 years old), Claude Niyonyishu (23 years old), and Juvent Nsengiyumva (19 years old).
The facts
According to the prosecution, the crime occurred on February 15th in Kirama village, in the Mudende zone of Rumonge district. The victim had gone into a bush to collect firewood when she was allegedly sexually assaulted by three young men before being killed.
When her body was discovered, the minor was undressed. One of her articles of clothing had reportedly been used as a ligature to strangle her, according to evidence presented in court.
Trial proceedings
The three defendants appeared in court for a summary trial. Emmanuel Mpawenayo admitted to the charges against him, while Claude Niyonyishu and Juvent Nsengiyunva denied any involvement.
In its closing arguments, the prosecution detailed the circumstances of the crime and presented several incriminating testimonies. Considering the facts established and extremely serious, it requested the maximum sentence.
A highly emotional hearing
The hearing took place in a tense atmosphere. Many residents attended the proceedings, expressing their outrage at the heinous nature of the crime. Some called for an exemplary punishment, arguing that any potential release would endanger the young girls of the area.
The verdict
After deliberation, the Rumonge First Instance Court found the three young men guilty and sentenced them to life imprisonment. They will also be jointly liable for 60 million Burundi francs in damages to the victim’s family.
The decision was welcomed by the civil party in the province of Burunga, where residents are demanding greater protection for minors.
