Two young men found dead in Ngoma, near the Rwandan border

SOS Médias Burundi

Ngoma-Mugina, March 4, 2026 – The bodies of two young men were discovered Wednesday morning, March 4, in Ngoma village, in the Rubona zone of Mugina district, Bujumbura province, in western Burundi. The locality is situated near the Rwandan border, not far from the Bweyeye district.

According to information gathered from local administrative authorities, the two victims were Imbonerakure, members of the youth wing of the CNDD-FDD, the ruling party.

According to these same sources, the young men were killed with sticks and clubs, primarily to the head. Local officials suggest they may have been involved in cross-border smuggling activities. Among the goods mentioned were beverages produced by the Brarudi company, although no further details were provided.

Angry families, suspects pointed out

A detail deemed troubling by the victims’ relatives : the bodies were not taken to the morgue. Authorities reportedly ordered the families to proceed directly with the burial.

The families and some residents of Ngoma village claim to know the alleged perpetrators of what they call a murder. They are demanding their arrest and the opening of an independent investigation to shed full light on the circumstances of this double death.

Contacted about this, the administrator of Mugina district, Anicet Saidi, neither confirmed nor denied the allegations. He stated that if this information proved accurate, investigations would be launched to establish responsibility.

A worrying security context

Since the beginning of 2026, nearly thirty bodies have been found in Bujumbura province, in western Burundi, according to local sources.

Last year, the province was already among the areas most affected by violence, according to a report by the Iteka League, a human rights group now forced to operate from exile.

These new findings have reignited the concerns of residents, who denounce a persistent climate of insecurity and demand transparent investigations to end what they consider a spiral of impunity.
