Bujumbura, July 20, 2026 – They had come from different regions of Burundi and from several countries, driven by faith and the hope of change in their lives. But the Kanguka evangelical crusade organized by preacher Chris Ndikumana in Bujumbura ended in tragedy : eight worshippers lost their lives and nine others were injured in a stampede as they left the event.

The gathering took place on Saturday, July 18, 2026, on the grounds of the Kamenge Secondary Technical School (ETS), north of Burundi’s commercial capital. It was led by Chris Ndikumana, founder of the Kanguka Christian program, which has been attracting thousands of followers in Burundi and around the world for several years.

The Kanguka program, which means “Awake” in English, is a preaching and prayer platform launched by Chris Ndikumana. Through broadcasts on social media, radio, and other digital platforms, the preacher offers biblical teachings, prayers, and messages of spiritual encouragement to millions of people.

Over the years, Kanguka has gained significant popularity in the Great Lakes region. Many followers testify to having found spiritual comfort and renewed hope through these teachings. Some travel long distances and cross borders to participate in the public gatherings organized by the preacher.

For the Bujumbura crusade, many participants from across the country arrived the day before to secure a spot at the venue. However, the large turnout exceeded the anticipated capacity. Thousands of people, including women, children, and the elderly, found themselves in a space where managing movement became difficult.

According to witnesses, some participants experienced heat-related illnesses due to lack of air, the heat, and the sheer number of people. The situation worsened as the crowd began to leave.

According to the police report released the following day, eight people died and nine others were injured after a stampede triggered by the crush of the crowd at the main exit. The security barrier reportedly collapsed under the pressure of the participants.

Among the victims were seven women and one man. Initial medical reports indicated that several deaths were due to asphyxiation caused by the density of the crowd. Two people also reportedly had visible injuries.

A massive mobilization around Kanguka

Despite the tragedy, many worshippers who attended the gathering continue to defend the importance of these religious gatherings. They claim to have come seeking a blessing, spiritual healing, or a message of hope.

For some participants, the Kanguka crusades represent a major gathering of faith, where people facing life’s difficulties come to pray and seek comfort.

But the tragedy also raises questions about the organization of large religious gatherings in Burundi, particularly the capacity of the venues, security measures, and crowd management.

The exact circumstances that led to this tragedy remain to be established. A possible investigation will have to determine responsibility and the measures that could have prevented this tragedy.
